Heroes
Take a young man give him a gun
Six weeks training so much to learn Send him marching on foreign soil
hear him screaming at the field guns recoil

Chorus
It was a long time ago but I still wake screaming It was a long time ago but I'm still bleeding
Heroes! Was what they said
Sent us fighting till the fields turned red Heroes! but we didn't know Still wounded but the scars don't show

Take a soldier to the front
Wont be 18 till next month
Send him charging under fire
Hear him screaming as he's trapped by the wire

Chorus

All Quiet On The NewtonFront
My names MacLeod, an honest man from Lewis
Live my life as best as I might try
Weave my tweeds and fish the bay
in the town of Stornoway
and watch as gods of war go marching by

Call up papers took me from my loom shed
became a gunner in the Ross Battery
took my men across the world
as our field gun shells we hurled
and marched into a foreign territory

Made it through the haze and smoke of battle
Four long years of hell and misery
of the five boys on our street
I'm the only one complete
the others maimed or dead or lost at sea

Waiting For The Boats
On New Years Eve 1919, the Admiralty Yacht lolaire hit the rocks
at the entrance to Stornoway Harbour as it was returning
hundreds of Lewismen home from the war. Over 200 men who had
survived years of hell drowned in sight of their own homes.

Kyle is a cold place at this time of year
breath like steam as we wait on the pier
greatcoats and kitbags and fingertips numb
waiting for the boats to carry us home

I board the Sheila and meet with old friends
as the steamer leaves take a dram for year-end
watching the lights of Kyle disappear
in a couple of hours we'll be home for New year

Crossing the Minch on a clear starry night
out on deck looking for Arnish Light
ahead see the lolaire making good speed
it wont be long till we're passing the Creed

Ahead a flare rises in desperate plea
aa boats on the Beasts and men in the sea
wild are the breakers and fierce is the swell
in the dark of the night hear the Iolaires bell

Dawn brings the light and the broken debris
litters the shore from Holm to the quay
bodies are laid out cold as the stone
waiting for families to carry them home

Dead Sheep Upstream
Sun is riding high
In a clear blue sky
Splendid weather, sor a walk in the heather
Put my new boots on, rtepping out in the sun
I see a cool river running free, thats where I want to be

As I bend to take a drink
Something makes me stop and think

Dead Sheep Upstream,
Dead Sheep upstream,
Dead Sheep Upstream............Bleagh

Voyage Of The Dawn Squad
Licks his lips crosses the street kicking dog ends with his feet
Early morning Dawn Squad man Looking for another can

Saving pennies to buy some beer
Not many shops will serve them here
Stumble drunk and in to town
Not enough beer to go around

Lend me a fiver
Buy me some drink.
Get me a 6 pack
Hear the bottles clink

See them standing by the lodge looking for police to dodge
dirty clothes unshaven face
no longer part of the human race
Dawn Squad waiting for the Giro
Dawn Squad waiting everyday
Dawn Squad drinking Super Lager
Dawn Squad coming out to play

All Alone In The Darkness
White beacon on the edge of the world
Above the cliffs like a flag unfurled
Sends its message with it's flashing light
A silent sentry
All alone in the night

A darker past when the light didn't burn
Sailed out next day to see what we could learn
Of the keepers there was no sight
A silent island
All alone in the night

An empty tower and upturned chair
A wooden table with food still there
No one left to man the light A silent tomb
All Alone in the night

Beyond. The Clisham
A view from the border between Lewis and Harris

Someone watching a border crossing
On a windswept road
Barrier lifting, contraband shifting
By lorry load

Beyond the Clisharn
Where the border post stands
Beyond the Clisharn
In no mans land
Spiky railings, illegal aliens
Crossing by night
Guests unbidden, keeping hidden
From the cold search -light

Guards in the watch-tower
Watching the border
Beyond the Clisham
You cannot cross over

Sulas Sgeir
Ten men
Set sail for the killing fields High on a rock Above Atlantic swell
Ten men
A mercenary mission
Where holy men of old came to dwell

Greenpeace
Turn a blind eye
Two thousand gugas going to die On Sula Sgeir
Upholders of tradition
With government permission On Sula Sgeir
O Sula Sgeir, set your shoulder to the wind of change.

Ten men
They hold the threads of history Hunters bold
Under a spindrift sky
Ten men
A predators religion On a cliff top
Where the Sula flies
Greenpeace
Turn a blind eye
Two thousand gugas going to die On Sula Sgeir
Upholders of tradition
With government permission On Sula Sgeir
O Sula Sgeir, set your shoulder to the wind of change.

Fish Boxes
Raising steam as the dawn comes clean
Nets are ready and the boys are keen
Leave the barrels and sheds behind
We're off to look for herring to find

Cast our nets, drift on the tide
Haul the silver over the side
Fill the boxes down below
Back to Stornoway we go
Fish boxes overflow
Full of herring, lots of dough
Catching herring on the Minch
Haul them in as we turn the winch
Boxes landing on the pier
Drifters cranes are swinging clear
Girls are gutting, barrels fill.
Silver scales and gapping gill
Day is done the fish are landed.
Time to get the nets all mended

The Uig Draftsmen
Can you feel the wind
As it blows tonight
Do you think it will blow for ever
Can you feel the wind In the fading light
We're in for stormy weather

Have you ever sat and wondered on a cold winters night
where the wind comes from as it blows out of sight.
does it come from the mountains does it come from the sea
does it come from the forests blowing all around the trees

Have you ever sat and wondered as your watching the breeze
carrying bits of paper round the compass degrees
does it come from the mountains does it come from the sea
does it come from the forests blowing all around the trees

Have you ever sat and wondered as you walk on the beach
why the winds are blowing to where ever they can reach
do they do it for the pleasure is it all some master plan
if you want to know the answer ask an Uig Draftsman

Moonrise Over The Grim
Theres a full moon rising in the sky
Over the Grim,Over the Grim
In the silence I hear the eagle cry
Over the Grim, Over the Grim
Outside the slow riverflows
Bringing the wild bratan home
And the feeling grows
As the cold wind blows
Moonrise Over the Grim Moonrise over the Grim

In the night the storm lantern burns
Over the Grim over the Grim
High above Orion slowly turns
Over the Grim Over the Grim
Outside the slow river flows
Bringing the wild bratan home
And the feeling grows
As the cold wind blows
Moonrise Over the Grim Moonrise Over the Grim
Funky Bodach
He spoke to me
His ancient wisdom While the hair
Grew grey upon his brow The years
Lay heavy on his shoulders The old times His here and now
I made so bold as to enquire What became of his inner fire he looked at me With eyes like steel And then I asked him How do you feel (He said)
Tha mi gu math tapaleidh I'm feeling fine But my bodies getting old Tha mi gu math tapaleidh I'm doing alright But my bodies getting old
Spent all his time making history As the years went rolling by A war, a wife a family The apple of their daddies eye
